Below you'll find seasonal advice for preventing common pest Southeastern pest problems from the National Pest Management Association.

SOUTHEASTERN U.S. : Black Widow Spiders, Fleas and Fire Ants

The best control for removing BLACK WIDOW SPIDERS - or any spiders for that matter - is with a vacuum. The vacuum must capture the spiders and their egg sacs. Then discard the vacuum bag in a sealed plastic bag. You should also seal cracks and holes in your home's exterior to help keep the spiders from coming inside. Consider removing heavy vegetation, like ivy, from next to the house, because spiders and the insects they eat like to live there. Patio lights are popular with bugs, so consider using yellow "bug lights" since they attract less "spider food."

To deal with FLEA infestations, it's best to remember where they live and reproduce. Flea larvae develop in cracks in concrete and in carpets, making them difficult to eliminate. Thorough cleaning is one of the best ways to get rid of the larvae and eggs. Carpeted areas need to be vacuumed and treated with a residual flea control product labeled for indoor carpets. Remember to vacuum daily. The concrete floor may be treated with the same flea control product. Vacuum and wash the floor thoroughly with soap and water to remove dust, flea larvae and flea eggs.

The red imported FIRE ANT is the most common and dangerous fire ant. Fire ants pose a significant health threat due to their stings. The key to fire ant control is to locate and treat all mounds. You can be treat mounds by drenching them with liquid insecticides or baits. Applications of a fire ant bait containing a growth regulator to the entire lawn help limit re-infestation of treated areas and work especially well on large lawns, acreages, golf courses or pastures.
